Climbing brinjal or thorny creeper benefits(Thoothuvalai benefits) and thoothuvalai rasam recipe

    Thorny creeper(Thoothuvalai plant) is commonly found in Deccan Peninsula. Thoothuvalai is also called Climbing brinjal. It's Botanical name is Solanum Trilobatum. Thoothuvalai is one of the important medicinal plants called as KAYAKALPA Herb in Siddha treatment.

     Thoothuvalai is a common place medicinal  plant in Tamilians household as a remedy for cold and cough. Thoothuvalai has dark green colour like a triangular-shaped leaves with small thorn, purplish blue colour flowers, small red colour berries.


THOOTHUVALAI MEDICINAL USES:

  • Various parts of the thoothuvalai plant such as roots, leaves, flowers and berries(fruits) are used for treating respiratory ailments.
  • The decoction of the leaves, berries and flowers is folk remedy for chronic cold and cough.
  • That leaves are given to increase fertility in males by treating watery semen and spermatorrhoea.
HOW TO PREPARE THOOTHUVALAI RASAM:

INGREDIENTS:
  • Thorny creeper leaves    - 30 leaves
  • Pepper - 1 Tea spoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 Tea spoon
  • Garlic - 5 cloves
  • Red chilly - 3 nos
  • Coriander leaves - 1 handful 
  • Curry leaves - 1 strand
  • Tamarind - 1 gooseberry size
  • Tomato - 1 ( if needed)
  • Salt - as needed
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tea spoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tea spoon
  • Asfoetida - 1/4 pteap spoon
  • Gingelly Oil 
METHOD: 
  • Clean and wash that leaves finely.
  • Take a kadaai, pour some oil, add pepper, cumin seeds, thoothuvalai leaves and garlic, then satue well in low medium flame and grind it together finely.
  • Then take a kadaai, pour oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, red chilly and that grinded paste, saute them well.
  • Then add tamarind paste, turmeric powder, salt and asfoetida.
  • After boiling that rasam, add coriander leaves finally and turn off the stove. 
  • Now you can serve the hot and healthy, yummy thoothuvalai rasam with rice.
